You walk in from the island path, find a seat among the agave plants and a host pours you a flight of Grand Bay by Oscar’s, the tequila our family makes. There is no tour bus and no long drive into the countryside: the visit fits easily between a walk on the Malecón, lunch and the beach.

How Tequila Is Made: From Blue Agave to Bottle

Every bottle of tequila starts with Weber blue agave, a plant that grows for several years in the fields of Jalisco before it is ready. At a visit to a tequila distillery in Puerto Vallarta you learn the main steps that turn that plant into the spirit in your glass:

• Harvest (jima): the leaves are cut away to leave the heart of the agave, called the piña.
• Cooking: the piñas are cooked to turn their starches into fermentable sugars.
• Fermentation and distillation: the juice is fermented and then distilled, usually twice, to create the spirit.
• Aging: blanco is bottled young, while reposado, añejo and extra añejo rest in oak barrels for longer, which gives them their color and smooth notes of wood and vanilla.

You can visit our tequila distillery in Puerto Vallarta in three ways. The free walk-in tasting needs no reservation and is a quick sampling of our family’s tequilas, perfect for a short stop. The Classic Tequila Tasting (MXN 900 per person) is a seated experience with four premium Grand Bay tequilas, three flavored tequilas, a cupreata mezcal and a Magia Clandestina raicilla, with pairings of warm salts, fruits, chocolate and coffee. The Tequila Connoisseur Tasting (MXN 1,400 per person) adds gourmet food pairings for foodies and special occasions.

Tips for Visiting a Tequila Distillery in Puerto Vallarta

• Go before 5 pm: we are open daily from 11 am to 5:30 pm, and the last walk-in for the free tasting is at 5 pm.
• Eat first, or after: have lunch at our restaurant before your tasting, or order from the restaurant menu and we will bring it to the Agave Garden.
• Stay for sunset: after the tasting, Golden Hour 2×1 runs from 4 to 6 pm at the restaurant bar.
• Bring your friends: groups, bachelorette parties and wedding guests are welcome; guided tastings include two or more tequila experts depending on group size.
• Plan your bottles: we can keep your bottles for you or deliver them to your hotel or villa.
